What is the significance of walls? Walls can mean different things to different people from different countries with different political and social issues. A wall being a simple boundary has a great emotional effect on the minds of both, the people inside and outside the boundary. The idea of walls has always existed, the Romans were wall builders, our kings and even the British when they came to India, built fortifications around their settlements to protect themselves from attacks and invaders. Walls can determine the kind of relationship two countries have with the each other and how its citizens look at and think of each other, like the Berlin Wall, its demolition marked the end of the Cold War, mostly the primary function of a wall is seen to be division and the fall of the Berlin Wall was one of the greatest moments in history, with Germany being unified and peace being restored. The wall on the US- Mexico border is very clear message from the US President which is that immigrants are no longer welcome into the United States. That USA is a distinct nation and that needs to be made clear by demarcating the area. Trump said he would build a ‘beautiful wall’ which clearly shows how he takes pride in the idea of building that wall.
A wall not only marks an area but also makes the difference in ideologies clear, a lot of nations build walls because they feel threatened in some kind of way by the other nation or territory which cannot be said in the case of USA after all its the sole superpower. Walls can on the other hand also be seen as a way of preventing further conflicts between the two nations, turning to be a solution for their conflicts, most people would make peace with it for its better than further disputes. But the real question is are building walls really a solution for the kind of world we are living in right now? A global village, where cultures are being exchanged and combined and opportunities should be for those who best deserve them rather than the people who live in the demarcated areas.
